What we know

A terrace is the place this question shows up first. The reason is the biting window. Aedes albopictus is diurnal with peaks at dusk and dawn, and the terrace is exactly where a household sits with skin exposed during those hours. A window screen keeps a single opening closed to mosquitoes. A gazebo keeps the whole seating area closed. The two answers protect different surfaces, and the price difference between them is not a difference of margin but of geometry.

The two architectures

Question 1. What is a fixed frame screen?

A fixed frame mosquito screen, sometimes called a Spannrahmen in German-speaking markets, is a custom-cut aluminium or fibreglass frame with a fitted mesh, made to the exact millimetre of an existing window or door opening. The frame sits in the opening on clips or a tension fit, is removable for cleaning, and turns a single window into a closed barrier against adult mosquitoes.

A whole-house installation covers every opening in the rooms the household uses at dusk and at night. For a typical European apartment with six openings in the living and sleeping areas, the total runs to roughly 1,200 to 1,500 EUR in installed cost, before any work on the terrace doors.

A fixed frame screen is permanent, single-purpose and tied to the building. It is measured and fitted by a tradesperson, who usually visits twice: once to measure, once to install. It is the right answer for a household that wants every window of the apartment permanently closed to mosquitoes without the screen changing the room.

Question 2. What is a gazebo mesh enclosure?

A gazebo mesh enclosure, in the Mosticare range the Terrazza TE-UNO for a 4 × 4 m square and the Terrazza TE-DUE for a 3 × 6 m rectangle, is a free-standing outdoor structure with a solid shade roof and four full-height mesh walls. It sits on the terrace as a piece of furniture rather than as building work. It is unpacked from a carry bag, erected by two people in 40 to 60 minutes the first time and in about 20 minutes thereafter, and packed away before any storm above 60 km/h.

The Terrazza TE-UNO is a 4 × 4 m square structure on a pop-up steel frame, with a solid shade roof, four full-height mesh walls, a zip door and a weighted bottom hem. It uses the same 156-count polyester mesh (25 holes per cm²) as the rest of the Mosticare untreated barrier family. It is fully untreated: no permethrin, no insecticide, no active substance on the fibre. The barrier is the mesh, not the chemistry. It is the right answer for a household that wants to keep the terrace open to the evening air while keeping the tiger mosquito off the seating area.

The two architectures protect different surfaces. A window screen protects a single opening. A gazebo protects a whole outdoor room. A household that wants both will usually end up with both.

The price reality

The price comparison needs to be honest about what is being counted.

A fixed frame screen, professionally measured, custom-made and installed, runs to about 200 EUR per opening in the European mid-range, with the bottom of the band around 80 EUR for a simple off-the-shelf frame the household clips in itself and the top of the band at 350 EUR for a custom sliding or rolling system [MyHammer 2024; Hausjournal 2025]. A whole-house installation for a typical European apartment runs to about 1,200 to 1,500 EUR in installed cost for the living and sleeping areas, before any work on the terrace doors.

A Terrazza TE-UNO at 150 EUR is a single product, complete, that protects a 4 × 4 m outdoor seating area. There is no per-opening calculation. There is no on-site measurement, no second visit from a tradesperson, no drilling into the window frame, no per-metre fitting charge. Two people set it up out of a carry bag.

The two products are not in the same architectural category. A household that needs both, permanent closed windows and a usable terrace, will end up paying for both. The honest framing is that the gazebo is the lower-cost, faster, portable answer for the outdoor room, and the window screens are the right answer for the windows. The brief sets them up as alternatives only because the typical buying decision happens at one moment in the season: when the bites start.

What each architecture actually protects

A fixed frame screen protects a single opening, and it does so for as long as it is in place. The protection is complete for the geometry of that opening: a fitted frame with no gaps, a mesh fine enough to exclude the tiger mosquito, and a removable design for cleaning. The protection is permanent in the sense that the screen does its job every day without the household thinking about it.

A gazebo protects the seating area underneath the roof. A mosquito outside the mesh is held out by the geometry. A mosquito inside the mesh is held in by the same geometry, so the household closes the zip door on entry and the mesh does the rest. The protection is complete for the geometry of the outdoor room: a 4 × 4 m square with a weighted bottom hem, four taut mesh walls and a single zip door.

What neither architecture protects is the rest of the terrace, the rest of the garden, the path from the kitchen to the seating area, or the bedroom window. A window screen protects the bedroom. A gazebo protects the seating area. A household that wants the whole house protected ends up layering them: window screens on the sleeping and living-room openings, a gazebo on the terrace, source reduction around the garden.

When to choose which

The honest answer is that the two architectures do different jobs. The right way to read the price comparison is to ask what the household is actually trying to protect.

Choose a fixed frame screen when:

  • The household wants the windows permanently closed to mosquitoes without changing how the windows are used.
  • The terrace is small, fully glazed already, or rarely used in the evening.
  • The household lives in a top-floor apartment with no outdoor space and the biting risk is at the open bedroom window.
  • The budget is for one opening at a time and the household can spread the work across two or three seasons.

Choose a gazebo mesh enclosure when:

  • The household spends the late afternoon and early evening on the terrace, which is when Aedes albopictus has its first biting peak.
  • The terrace is large enough to need its own room, 4 × 4 m or more, and the household wants the space usable as a dining and living extension.
  • The household prefers a portable, no-drill, no-tradesperson answer.
  • The budget for the season is for a single product rather than a whole-house installation.
  • The household has infants, pregnant household members, or chemically sensitive adults, where the untreated mesh enclosure is the right material class.

Choose both when:

  • The household wants every opening permanently closed and the terrace usable in the evening. This is the layered answer: a gazebo on the terrace, fixed frame screens on the windows, source reduction in the garden. The price is the price of both layers.

The untreated material class, and why it matters for the gazebo answer

The Mosticare untreated barrier family, which includes the Terrazza TE-UNO, the Terrazza TE-DUE for the long 3 × 6 m balcony, the bedroom canopy net, the Igloo baby canopy, the Volto travel net and the Apertura door roller blind, is built on five properties.

First, the mesh is fully untreated. There is no permethrin, no alpha-cypermethrin, no deltamethrin on the fibre. There is nothing to re-apply, nothing to inhale over the dinner table and nothing to migrate onto food or onto a child's hand.

Second, the mesh is breathable polyester, 156-count, 25 holes per cm². The hole size is set against the four to six millimetre body length of Aedes albopictus, the smallest mosquito species in routine European exposure, so the same mesh excludes the larger Culex pipiens as well.

Third, the products carry no biocidal claims. An untreated mesh is a physical barrier, not a biocidal product under Regulation (EU) 528/2012, the Biocidal Products Regulation. The Terrazza does not carry and cannot carry an EU BPR authorisation, because the regulation does not apply to an untreated physical product [ECHA, BPR framework].

Fourth, the products make no medical or efficacy claim. The Terrazza reduces the number of bites on the seating area beneath its roof, by physically excluding the mosquito. It does not prevent disease and is not a substitute for medical advice. A household travelling to a malaria-endemic or high-burden dengue region needs a treated net and a clinician's guidance, not a gazebo.

Fifth, the barrier works alongside, not instead of, skin repellents. DEET and picaridin on the skin, applied to the label, in the hours when the gazebo is open, complete the protection. They do not replace the barrier.

These five properties are why the untreated material class is the right one for households with infants, pregnant household members, chemically sensitive adults, and outdoor dining. The price comparison with fixed frame screens only makes sense when the comparison is fair, which means comparing like with like: untreated with untreated, treated with treated, professional with professional.

Source reduction is the other half of either answer

Neither architecture reduces the population of Aedes albopictus breeding in the saucers, blocked gutters and water butts around the house. The barrier protects the person inside it. The barrier does not reduce the mosquito population. The other half of the answer, for either architecture, is source reduction.

The sites that matter for the tiger mosquito are small and artificial: the saucer under a flowerpot, the blocked gutter, the pet bowl topped up daily, the bucket under a downpipe, the tarpaulin that pools water, the discarded tyre. Most sit within a few hundred metres of the house, because this species does not travel far [ECDC factsheet].

The household that empties the saucers, clears the gutters, refreshes the pet bowls, covers the water butts and removes the tyres in the first one to two weeks after the first rains after a heatwave breaks the resurgence cycle at its narrowest point. The household that waits until autumn is dealing with a much larger population with the same toolkit and far less return.

The post-heatwave window is the moment the bites return, predictably, because the desiccation-resistant eggs of Aedes albopictus survive the dry weeks in a dormant state and hatch in synchrony when the rains reflood the same small sites [ECDC factsheet]. A 2025 study in Parasites and Vectors tracked knock-down resistance mutations in Aedes albopictus across Europe and found them spreading, with the highest frequencies in eastern Mediterranean populations, which is one more reason non-chemical protection (physical exclusion and source reduction) carries more of the load than it did a decade ago.

What to do this season

Five steps cover the terrace and the windows for the 2026 season, in either architectural order:

  1. Decide what the household is trying to protect. The windows, the terrace seating area, or both. The answer picks the architecture.
  2. If the answer is the windows, get three quotes from local installers for retrofitted fixed frame screens, and budget 150 to 250 EUR per opening. The work happens in two visits, measurement and installation, with no drilling into the window frame in most retrofits.
  3. If the answer is the terrace, choose the geometry. A 4 × 4 m square calls for the Terrazza TE-UNO. A 3 × 6 m long balcony calls for the Terrazza TE-DUE. Both are 150 EUR, fully untreated, with the same 156-count polyester mesh, the same pop-up steel frame and the same three-year seasonal lifecycle.
  4. Clear the breeding sites around the house in the first seven days after the first rains. Empty the saucers, clear the gutters, refresh the pet bowls, cover the water butts, remove the tyres.
  5. Add DEET or picaridin on the skin, applied to the label, in the hours when the gazebo is open or when the windows are open for ventilation. The barrier carries the structural load. The repellent is the add-on for the open hours.

The household that does these five things this season meets the tiger mosquito at its narrowest point and on the household's own terms. The household that waits until autumn meets a much larger population with the same toolkit and far less return.

What to watch

The ECDC updates its invasive mosquito distribution maps in April and September each year. The European Commission named five European capitals as growing-risk cities in January 2026. The Robert Koch-Institut in Germany, Santé publique France, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Italy, the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu in the Netherlands, Sciensano in Belgium and the AGES in Austria publish weekly or monthly vector and arbovirus bulletins through the season. The ECHA active-substance register and the Biocidal Products Regulation list show whether a new repellent active is moving through the European assessment pipeline.

The honest signal is the local surveillance, not a brand claim. A household in Frankfurt, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Brussels or Zagreb is in a named growing-risk area. A household elsewhere in the ECDC distribution footprint, the 369 regions across 16 countries, is in a known established area. A household in northern Scotland or northern Scandinavia is not in the tiger mosquito's current range, though the European Environment Agency's Climate-ADAPT indicator for tiger-mosquito season length shows the active season lengthening as autumns warm.
